“Give me silence, water, hope
  Give me struggle, iron, volcanoes”

—Pablo Neruda

This painting depicts a view from high on Aconcagua, the mountain known as “the Stone Sentinel,” in the Andes Range of Argentina. Alex completed the painting after a climbing expedition on Aconcagua in 2004. Rising to an elevation of 22,841 feet, Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in South America and in the Western hemisphere. The unusual snow and ice formations depicted in the foreground of the painting are known as “penitentes.”  With its intense contrasts and deep blue sky, The Stone Sentinel is one of the latest of Alex’s paintings to capture the unique qualities of light found in the rarefied air of extreme altitudes.
All proceeds from sales of The Stone Sentinel prints were donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association during Alex’s year-long fundraising drive. The total number of Limited Edition prints was based on the number of contributions he received for the Association.
